Training a golden retriever is very important.  Golden retrievers are intelligent dogs and eager to please, so this makes training them a little easier than most other dogs. But they are also full of energy and can be excitable which requires you to be calm, patient and firm in your golden retriever training.

It is best to begin training a golden retriever as a young puppy so as not to develop bad habits. If you have adopted an older dog you should commence training immediately so it understands that you are “top dog” and must follow your lead.

Start with basic obedience training. Simple sit, stay and come commands are the fundamentals on which to build later, together with lots of positive praise and maybe a treat or two when your dog responds correctly.

If you have problems in establishing control over your dog or experience other behavioural training problems you can find some ideas in this FREE 6 day mini-course on dog training.

Remember that training a golden retriever with positive reinforcement is the best way to ensure a satisfying relationship with your dog and hours of fun and happiness.
