Golden retriever puppy training can be a delightful and rewarding experience for both you and your new puppy. In fact, this is the perfect time to begin your golden retriever training.
Puppies are learning all the time so it is important to establish boundaries from the beginning on where they are allowed to go in your home and what they can do.
Remember that this will set the pattern for what they expect as a 70 lbs adult. While old dogs can learn new tricks, even intelligent golden retrievers find it difficult to forget old habits. Being consistent with your puppy is one of the most important aspects of golden retriever training.
Tips to prevent bad habits in your golden retriever puppy:
Nipping – Golden retriever puppies are no exception in this common trait. They often mouth or nip their family members in play and learn much through their mouth. This can usually be controlled with a firm “no”. So do not encourage nipping by playing games of chasing hands or feet. Striking your puppy’s muzzle will not be effective and only encourage this behaviour.
Chewing – This is a perennial problem with golden retriever puppies. They chew from teething or just curiosity. So be alert and after saying “no” firmly, replace the forbidden item with a suitable toy, such as rope toy or ring. The best advice is not to leave your golden retriever puppy out of its crate unsupervised.
Barking – Golden retrievers are not generally barkers, but if encouraged during play barking or growling can easily become an unpleasant habit. So, if you don’t want your dog barking every time someone arrives at the door, discourage it from the start.
